Under the directives of Major General (Rtd) G. A. Chandrasiri, Chairman, Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Limited, a series of meetings were held and site visits were conducted with Japan’s Taisei Corporation, the contractor of the BIA Terminal 2 project, Japan Airport Consultants (JAC) and the senior officials of AASL to accelerate the BIA Terminal 2 project.

A meeting was held on 13th July 2020 at the AASL Board Room with the participation of Major General (Rtd) G. A. Chandrasiri, Chairman AASL, Mr. A. Warushahennadige, Director AASL, Japan’s Taisei Corporation representatives, JAC representatives and Heads of the Divisions of AASL to confer the commencement plans of the project construction.

The officials discussed the matters related to workforce mobilization plans, foreign staff facilitation, and staffing of the Project Management Unit (PMU) at the meeting. Further, the officials discussed the passenger traffic arrangements to be implemented after the commencement of construction work.

The new state of the art passenger terminal will have the capacity to handle 9 million passenger movements which will increase the total handling capacity at BIA to 15 million per annum.

In view of diagnosing the COVID-19 affected passengers arriving in Sri Lanka, a PCR test laboratory has been established at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).

Accordingly, Airport & Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Limited has funded Rs.16.5 mn for this (PCR) laboratory.The laboratory is equipped with the latest technology, including automated sample extractors, PCR machines, consumables, pharmacological refrigerators and freezers, generators, reagents, and dedicated utilities such as water supply, electricity, and telecommunication, etc

The handing over of the PCR laboratory to Ministry of Health & Indigenous Medicine by AASL took place on 9th of July 2020 with the participation of Major General Dr. S.H Munasinghe Secretary of the Minister of Health & Indigenous Medicine, Dr. Anil Jasinghe Director General of Health Services, Dr. Jayaruwan Bandara Director of Sri Lanka Medical Research Institute, Major General (Rtd.) G. A. Chandrasiri Chairman AASL, Mr. Rajeewasiri Sooriyaarachchi Vice Chairman AASL, Board of Directors AASL, senior officials of AASL and other officials of Ministry of Health and Medical Research Unit. Sri Lanka were scheduled to be audited under the USAP-CMA, during the period 10th - 19th June’20.  Scheduled audit was postponed indefinitely, owing to the worldwide outbreak of COVID-19 which affected almost all ICAO Member States.  Currently, ICAO has 193 Member States.

   Under the Universal Security Audit Program (USAP) - 2nd cycle, Sri Lanka were last audited in the year 2012 May 24th-31st, based on her performances on the effective implementation of aviation security oversight system, under eight critical elements in nine audit areas. Sri Lanka scored a very satisfactory 85.06%, well above the world average of 67.89% based on the results of 145 States already audited by then were taken into account of the total of 191 Member States.

The postponed audit would be rescheduled by the ICAO shortly, hopefully towards the end of year 2020.
