A bilateral aviation agreement between Sri Lanka and Netherland will be signed. This aims to initiate direct passenger and cargo flights between the two countries. Hon. Minister of Tourism Prasanna Ranathunga states that this will further develop tourism, education, trade, investment, agriculture and cultural relationships between Sri Lanka and Netherland.

Minister further stated that the proposal to sign the aviation services agreement is submitted to the cabinet for approval. This agreement was due to sign according to the Vistas of Prosperity and Splendor, the policy framework of H.E, the President, Gotabaya Rajapaksha, aiming at economic development.

The Chicago Convention, signed in 1944, mandates to enter into aviation agreements to operate international commercial flights for two or more states. 193 countries are currently registered in the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The Minister pointed out that entering into agreements with those countries will allow engaging in aviation activities when required.

Diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Netherland date back to 1951. Moreover, it was decided to operate 14 flights per week between Sri Lanka and Netherland during the discussion. Sri Lankan Airlines and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines in Netherland are also planning to join for this purpose, Minister, Prasanna Ranathunga, further stated.
